Self-Defense, Murder, and Killing: What is the Difference?

In this Ask Pastor Tim we look at: Is it Biblically acceptable to defend yourself or your family if violent, or even deadly, force is necessary?

Question: Is it Biblically acceptable to defend yourself or your family if violent, or even deadly, force is necessary? I know there are verses such as Genesis 9:6, Exodus 21:12 and Leviticus 24:17, 19-20 in the Old Testament that made it acceptable, but I see many scriptures in the New Testament such as in the Gospels, Romans 13:9, James 2:11-12 that command us not to murder! If we murder someone because they are murdering, aren’t we doing the same thing? Also, Matthew 5:39 tells us to give the other cheek! Is is Biblically OK to defend ourselves when physically hurt by another?
